[NOTE: Verb tenses in this might be all over the place as, while I'm trying to keep the ramble approximately chronological, I'll be updating and adding to it as things are RPed out, and I haven't ruled out going back and just writing a few scenes inserted at places in the timeline showing events at the Desert Palace and so on]

Regulus remembers dying. To say it wasn't pleasant would be a massive understatement. He's likely to have nightmares for a long time, and some PTSD issues for even longer.

It was something of a shock to wake up, in a situation that was supposedly reasonably safe. He found himself on a world called Gaia, in a strange place called the Desert Palace, and under the watch of a young woman named Mikoto... who had only saved him, or so she claimed, because she had sensed he used a kind of magic she hadn't yet had a chance to study.

Gaia, he learned, wasn't Mikoto's home world either. That had been a world called Terra, which had been destroyed by her older brother Kuja when Kuja had had something Mikoto called a 'psychotic break'. The Desert Palace was a remnant of Terra. Kuja was thought dead, but it turned out he'd been sealed in some kind of stasis within the Desert Palace by their other brother Zidane. He was still in stasis, as Mikoto didn't yet know how to cure some condition inflicted on him by someone named Garland, who, as far as he understands it was some sort of servant construct that had looked after the Mikoto and her siblings when they were children.

He's learned a lot of new words from Mikoto, mostly related to science. And he's not inclined to get on the bad side of someone who comes from a people that can destroy worlds in a fit of temper. So it seemed best to be cautious, to watch, and to wait until he had a better understanding of things.

Regulus has taken not being able to go home about as well as he took the realization that he was going to die. Which means not that well, but also as something to mostly keep to himself. At first this wasn't at all noticeable. The stage of denial was marked by Regulus behaving as if he were on some vacation. He rarely discussed home or family, instead learning things about Gaia with all the enthusiasm of a tourist. Not having his family's expectations weighing him down was likely something of a relief too, even if he might not realize that.

He didn't even object - much - to Mikoto wanting him to learn to fight in ways that didn't use magic. Especially when being warned of places like Oeilvert, where the defenses block use of magic, or spells like Silence that, rather than rendering one literally unable to talk, 'muted' magical ability. She also showed him how to access the 'Nexus', an interdimensional area that he had first appeared in. (He'd fallen out of a portal and literally landed on Mikoto. The portal closed promptly afterward.)

Regulus isn't normally given to public displays of anger, so his passage through the next stage seemed full of bouts of wanting to be left alone. That wasn't always the case, though, as his reaction to copies produced by the Epitaphs of Oeilvert showed. Combat lessons from Mikoto that would have occurred around this time were likely also a helpful outlet.

Oeilvert)

Normally bargaining follows anger. Regulus believes it would put his family in danger if he were to return, and this stage has been particularly hard on him. To avoid temptation, he's made certain he doesn't know the PIN Coordinates for his world - information that would let him use a bit of teleportation technology (it came from the interdimensional Nexus he initially arrived in) to possibly return. He also reminds himself often that Mikoto has said that in most cases if one dies in their universe of origin, that universe will not let them return, even with a PINpoint device.

On some occasions, he visits the Nexus. Sometimes he even risks slipping through the stable portals in the Nexus, ones that seem mostly safe, just because it gets very lonely at the Desert Palace even with Mikoto there. For the most part, though, all he does is quietly people-watch. And it only helps a little with not feeling alone.

Talk With Jake Sully About Leaving Home)

Visits to the Black Mage Village are better for that, and he's on fairly good terms with them.

He's been more than a bit angsty at times in this stage, occasionally going over all the reasons why he can never go home, as much to remind himself as anything else. He's also caught himself more than once prone to quiet scheming... plotting what he WOULD do if he COULD go home. Confronting Peter Pettigrew tends to come up high on the list. So does locating and trying to speak to Sirius. Warning his parents and hopefully gaining their belated approval for his actions (well, the ones against Voldemort at least... there are other things he's relieved his parents will never know about) has crossed his mind, as if he ever went home he thinks they'd be sure to notice the Tapestry revealing that he wasn't dead. He's fairly sure it would say he was dead so long as he doesn't go home, given how very close he was and that he would have vanished in that state.

Talking with Telrim/Natasha about necessities)

He also thinks, often, of anything else that could be done to hasten Voldemort's demise.

He seems to be approaching the fourth and fifth stages as a combination, with some relapses to the third. Knowing he can't return home, that if he could it would put his family in danger, has pushed him closer to accepting his exile, but not without a great risk of depression.

Regulus harbors a great many regrets, both in terms of things he's done and said as well as things he didn't get the chance to do or say. He had to leave his family with no real goodbyes, and no warnings regarding the things he'd learned about Voldemort - for their own safety. And he would have desperately wanted to speak to his brother one last time, for a myriad of reasons.

His awareness of those regrets make him more likely to speak his mind than he once was, though he's still heavily prone to keeping many other things secret. When he faces death again - something he accepts as inevitable, though he hopes won't be any time soon - he doesn't want any more additions in terms of things he wishes he'd said to people while he still had the chance. (Like telling Sirius he misses him, and will always think of him as his brother)

New Years celebrations in some Nexus areas confused him, despite warnings that dates and times often do not match up between dimensions. He's certain it's been too long to be his first New Years since his 'death', and hasn't been long enough to be New Years again...

This didn't stop him from making a resolution he might have once considered unthinkable - to do something he knows his parents would not have approved of (if only so he could shake the nagging feeling at times that his mother could send him a Howler even under the circumstances). He really had meant just to wander through a portal and have a cup of tea in a muggle area... but it lead to a tutorial in computer use from a muggle girl, something that was not in the least an unpleasant experience.
